Security matters

Safety on board is one of the major concerns of any transit authority. Protecting the bus fleet, the passengers and drivers and providing a rapid response in case of an accident is critical.

  • Safety for passengers and drivers. Every bus is, somehow, an agglomeration of people. Concentrations of people, especially at rush hours, are a magnet for pickpockets. Similarly, public spaces are open for groups of people who might become violent or commit theft on board. CCTV solutions by themselves are not enough to provide a fast reaction from public safety institutions.
  • Real-time surveillance. Surveillance does not make much sense if information gets to the security center too late. This information includes the current state of the bus and the passengers on board, video data, location of the vehicles… And only if it is shared in real time can it be of used for your passengers’ peace of mind.
  • Emergencies on board. The whole fleet must be prepared for any kind of difficulty including:
    • Situations that might require the activation of emergency protocols (on-board incidents, fast responses to medical conditions, etc.).
    • Prioritization of emergency traffic over other uses, such as on-board entertainment, must be possible in an easy and neat way.
    • Vehicle theft. Protection against theft requires the continuous and reliable tracking of the locations of all vehicles in the fleet, which can not only provide the position of the various buses at any time, but also provide the route history.

Punctuality, adhering to the schedule, coordinating with other transport connections… All these features are possible today, if you have the right technology.

  • Secure Payments on board in order to provide the user with a totally reliable and secure connection over public networks.
  • A need for encrypted communications: a must when secure transactions (such as online payments) are to be made from the bus.
  • A state-of-the-art mixture of hardware and software to ensure the integrity of data delivery between the buses and the rest of the world.
  • Devices on board must be designed to resist the demanding environmental standards in the industry, including:
    • Protection against any kinds of power spikes that might damage the device
    • Endure the harshest environmental specifications, with extreme temperatures and humid conditions, damaging vibrations or vehicle collisions.
    • Be able to survive sudden poweroffs, making sure the communications platform finishes all its tasks independently of the vehicle’s on/off state.

Punctuality, adhering to the schedule, coordinating with other transport connections… All these features are possible today, if you have the right technology.

  • Scheduling. Planning the route beforehand is important, but being able to change it according to the current weather or traffic conditions is equally important, and can save money, as in:
    • Coordination with real-time transport databases to avoid traffic jams.
    • The choice of the best possible route, particularly in urban areas where areas under construction can appear without prior notice.
    • Interconnection with other means of transport and their operation centers (airports, train stations) to keep passengers informed when traveling (commuting, passengers on their way to the airport, etc.).
  • A modern bus company must be informed at all times about what is going on in its fleet, in order to be able to take action against minor disputes that can occasionally arise on the buses. It must also be also prepared for accidents, so it is easy to make quick decisions for the majority of the passengers’ well-being.

Solution

Security, at all levels, ensured by having a communications network platform in your vehicles

Unprecedented mobile advances in the last decade have translated into major breakthroughs in terms of security on board.

The passengers’ well-being is a subtle mixture of several aspects, all of them different but equally important. Firstly, there is the passenger’s sensation of feeling safe on board, knowing that everything is under control, including their personal safety and also that of their belongings, often separated from them during their journey. Secondly, there is the control over the entire bus fleet and management center, comprising the entire supply chain. In this sense, GPS capabilities play a crucial role by allowing the vehicles to be continuously tracked. And in third place, it also concerns the security mechanisms embedded into the platform in order to provide the best possible service to your customers. These aspects, often undervalued by customers and simply taken for granted are, however, of vital importance to the passengers as they provide the coordination tasks necessary to offer outstanding service.

If you take a closer look at these three main aspects, you see it is possible to answer all the questions previously posed:

The passengers’ integrity (and that of their belongings, too)

  • Communications available no-matter-what, and no breakdowns. How? By providing multiple links carriers (eliminating the dependence on a single one) and a fully rugged device.
    • Power supply protection for direct battery power supply.
    • Environmental specifications: extended temperature range and very high humidity conditions, shock and vibration-proof.
    • Delayed power-off, in order to make sure the communications platform finishes all its tasks independently of the vehicle’s on/off state.
  • Easy deployment, normally achieved by a zero touch installation
  • Minimal use of bandwidth, so that it is optimized to share the exceeding bandwidth with other services.
  • A state-of-the-art mixture of hardware and software to ensure the integrity of data delivery between the buses and the rest of the world (IPSec, VPN tunneling, etc.).

Full control over your bus fleet with tracking capabilities

  • High availability and reliability in communications, since if they are not ensured, tracking becomes pointless.
  • GPS integrated and NMEA standard, so that the resulting system is very simple to integrate in communications and applications. This will allow you to have all your vehicles geolocated at any time from your head office – and in fact, and if properly configured, even from your own personal smartphone!

Provide the best possible service to your customers

  • Punctuality is, after all, perceived as one of the most important aspects upon choosing a bus company. This high-value service for your passengers includes the possibility of being informed on the current state and predictions of traffic by combining LTE and GPS real-time data.
  • Several cameras (CCTV) + DVR, all of them integrated into a single switch, with several high-speed Ethernet connections available. And Wi-Fi cameras (working as AP if necessary).
  • Automatic download of video data at depots (client mode), by means of geofencing capabilities: the communications platform automatically detects when the bus enters the depot and proceeds to activate the Wi-Fi mode, downloading the data without using the LTE link.
  • Additionally, the device does not automatically power off with the bus, but instead employs a delayed power-off system to complete the data download.
  • Temperature sensors for automatic power off and power protection, with the corresponding certifications to ensure its correct operation.
  • A wide range of security mechanisms implemented (IPSec, encrypted data, VPN tunneling…).
